Senator Williams Graves’ Statement on the Brown V. Board of Education Scholarship Committee
Richmond, VA– Senator Angelia Williams Graves was unanimously elected as the Chair of the Brown v. Board of Education Scholarship Committee on Tuesday, May 22, 2024. Senator Williams Graves expressed gratitude for being entrusted with this significant role, emphasizing the committee's power to bring about meaningful change through education. The Committee has secured $2 million in the recent biennial budget and with the help of a dedicated constituent advocate, the committee also secured $500,000 in federal CDS grant funds, ensuring continued support for the education of Virginians adversely affected by the Brown v. Board of Education decision and their descendants. This is the first year descendants of impacted Virginians were awarded scholarships. With all qualified applicants receiving preliminary approval for funding, the total award is nearly $500, 000.
“This is a significant victory for Virginia,” Senator Graves stated. “I commend my colleagues for their unwavering commitment to developing a sustainable plan for the future of the Brown v. Board of Education Scholarship program. Their dedication ensures that we can continue to support educational opportunities for these deserving students."
